Locomotive, One Penny or Glee?

The Loco, as regulars affectionately call it, is the winner of this poll. These guys are serious about coffee and it evident that people agree. Other than making great coffee the Loco is also great at polarizing people with their lack of skim milk and absence of sugar (things may be changed by now). But skim milk is a joke and you don't need sugar in coffee, well that is my opinion at least.

One Penny was my number one for a long time, however I feel like they’re not on their game as much as when they were with the previous owners. Still it is a cool place in a cool location. I still don't understand the stuffed animals, but Doughheads is almost next door. Doughheads! PS I have a feeling they are going to start doing coffee soon.

Glee Coffee. The old faithful. I have a lot of friends that swear by Glee. I don't go here much because I don't really go to Darby St. They roast all their own beans and supply a number of other cafes around the region which is pretty awesome. Drop in if you are on Darby.

The new kid on the block is making quite the impression. Mr. Sister, the former OPB owner’s newest venture is an espresso bar in a shop in a shopping centre. A bit unorthodox for specialty coffee, however that hasn't stopped them from making an excellent drop.

The Bull of Cooks Hill. I felt like I was in Melbourne the first time I went to Welsh Blacks. There was a line and people were standing around out the front on the footpath. The vibe reminded me of Auction Rooms in Melbs (well the waiting on the street at least). I like it here, it is a unique spot in Newcastle.

I am particularly biased towards this one as it is my regular. Side Pocket is exceptionally consistent with their coffee. I have one almost every day and it is always good. I was a bit apprehensive at first with its unconventional location next to the service station, however that is another thing I have grown to love about Side Pocket.

When I first moved to Newcastle Dark Horse was the place to go, however that then changed. I don't pretend to know why. I was told they are just "not as good as before". However my latest reports say that Dark Horse is back and fit and fighting form. I've never had a bad coffee from these guys so I don't really know what all the fuss is about.

People proclaimed to me "You're from Melbourne, you must go to Suspension!" So I did. I've been to Suspension a few times, every time I'm there I feel like the staff don't really care. They do their thing, I do mine. They make the coffee, I drink it. Works for me.

I love having a coffee in the sun at Rolador on a nice day. It is a great spot to watch people coming from the train station. The staff must see some strange things there. They have a Mexican inspired menu that I enjoy covering on the complimentary hot sauce. Love it.

I have friends who live above Ground Floor. True story. They do all day breakfast and you can get something from them after 3 on a Saturday, which is rare for cafés on Hunter St. Other than random fun facts Ground Floor do a good drop. Not in my top five, however they appear in quite a number of others.

Uprising has to be one of the best bakeries in Australia. They do everything well here. They are that kid at school that was good at school and sport and music and popular...

I don't understand why this place isn't more popular. Maybe it is because it is uphill from the rest of the Cafes in Newcastle. People are lazy after all.

The staff here bagged my wife and I out for both wearing stripes. I then pointed out that all of their staff there was also wearing stripes. Then there was a long awkward silence whilst we waited for our coffees.

There is a few Zaaki advocates at work. They try and win me over. I'm on team Side Pocket though.

More people need to check out Moor. There is a long bar style seat table thing out the front. Sit there, drink coffee and enjoy the sun.

My ideal Newcastle day normally involves a post beach Estabar visit. Iced Latte, in the sun, next to the beach. Excellent.

In where the Tufty Hidey Hole use to be Sher Wood is making a name for itself. I much prefer it over the Tufty. They also do jaffles. I'll repeat that. They do jaffles! This is one to watch in future polls.

Blue Door, the trendiest cafe in Newcastle (says all the radio ads). I like it here, I would go here more often but it leaves an unsatisfyingly large dint in my bank account after every visit.
